Superb stone statue of bodhisattva
Avalokiteshvara sitting in the Lotus position doing the Dhyâni-Mudrâ
(meditation mudrâ) gesture.
Traces of polychrome and gold (crown and necklaces)
This
works presents us with a distinctive image of bodhisattva
Avalokiteshvara, in its feminine form of Guanyin (Quan Âm).
This
bodhisattva is recognizable by its dress, a loose garment tied on the
stomach, a coat covering the shoulders and a veil on the head. The
richness of its ornamentation made up of foliage in the crown,
bearing the image of Buddha, and pearl necklaces. The deity is seated
in the Lotus position, making the Dhyâni-Mudrâ gesture.
The
folds of the fabric, the details of its ornamentation, the fullness
of the shapes, and the sense of elegance from a high majesty, are
characteristic of the peak of the Buddhist art, from the Ming dynasty
period.
This statue is
exceptional for the quality of its execution, and was probably placed in a sanctuary of first importance.
Boddhisattva
is a being (sattva) of ‘’wonderful kindness’’ who renounces
the definitive release, reaching the Nirvana, he stays in samsara to
help all men find their liberation. (In the Tibetan Buddhism, one can
make the wish of Boddhisattva). In that way, the Boddhisattva, a
being of pure compassion, is opposed to the arhat who, in the
doctrine of Theravada (primitive Buddhism) only yearns for his own
salvation.
