The
square and external section of this object encloses an empty cylinder
inside. The exact meaning of this interpenetration of the circle and
the square, showing in the angles a series of eight schematic masks,
is still not determined with certainty. Its shape could derive from
such ornaments as tubular pearls or bracelets, however it is clear
that its use falls under a ritual context.
Those
pieces are most often discovered close to bi (pi) discs, thereby
representing respectively the Earth and the Sky. The Cong itself is
thus not only a talisman, but an efficient tool which enables one to
communicate with superior forces while warding off evil powers and
which is part of a well-defined entourage : that of the Shaman.
This
work is the result of the intense labour required by the technique of
jade, hard material which in a time of absence of metal tools was
only worked on by friction and rotation.
This
stone is in China more than a simple medium, it reflects the
metaphysical concerns of the ruling elite of the Neolithic.
The congs
were discovered in the graves of exceptional characters of the
Liangzhu culture, probably masters of both the temporal and the
spiritual, and whose role must have been that of shaman - clan leader.
